Future met tradition: The 5th Research Conference IT-Sicherheit NRW took place in Sankt Augustin, in the special atmosphere of the castle Birlinghoven. The topic of this year's Research Day, that was organized by the network nrw.unITS: IT Security for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

„AI“ as a challenge for the research for cyber security

Autonomous systems have a distinct understanding of their own tasks and abilities to make independent decisions. There is a risk that a non-intended overriding of IT security could endanger the security of users and production processes. Due to the high degree of autonomy and flexibility, autonomous systems offer a previously unknown and unexplored gateway from the outside. These and further developments in the area of Artificial Intelligence – and particularly Machine Learning – continue to pose new challenges and questions to the research for cyber security. Reason enough to make this a topic for this year's Research Day.

The lectures – as multifaceted as the topic itself

Some 70 guests from science and industry came to attend the unique event. Annette Storsberg, State Secretary for the Ministry of Culture and Science of NRW, started off the Research Conference with a welcoming speech while Max von Malotki, journalist and radio host, presented the event. The lectures were as multifaceted as the topic itself: from attacks on machine learning methods to hidden voice commands and secure big data. In addition, there was also enough space for discussion and networking.

Increasing importance of the research for cyber security

Organizer and guests were more than satisfied. Martin Kowalski, network nrw.unITS: "The 5th Research Conference IT-Sicherheit NRW stayed abreast of changes in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and also indicated the increasing importance of the research for cyber security in this area – for the society, companies and individuals. It is now a question of facing these challenges and doing decided research. As a result, we will learn and obtain new findings, not only the machines.“
