HGI Alumni of the Month

In our series "Alumni of the Month" we introduce Dr. Kai Jansen in July.

[Translate to Englisch:]

More than 20 years ago, the IT Security program at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) was the first of its kind in Germany. Since then, many students have successfully graduated, some of them even earning a doctorate in Bochum to start their careers from here. We present some of these graduates in our new series "Alumni of the Month". They will tell us what they learned in Bochum and how they have progressed since then.

HGI Alumni of the Month July:
Dr. Kai Jansen

Then and Now

  • 2014: Master IT-Security
  • 2019: Doctorate Faculty ET IT
  • 2022: Living in Bochum

Work history

  • 04/2019 – today: PHYSEC GmbH, Head of Research
  • 04/2014 – 03/2019: Research Assistant (Ruhr-Universität Bochum) – Information Security Group

Lessons Learned

  • In my studies: IT security is not the "hacking" in common perception. As in any other discipline, there are a number of tools that must be mastered.
  • In professional life: In business, there are still many challenges beyond the content of studies. The need for skilled workers is much greater than assumed and will increase in the future.
