Why can we remember a two-hour movie but not all three things on a shopping list? And what does this have to do with computer science? On February 23, 2022, 2pm to 5pm, the Faculty of Computer Science invites you to the second "Computer Science Day" at RUB. Once again, the event will take place online. Curious people and those interested in computer science will find the answer to the questions posed above. They will also learn about some of the faculty's research focuses and the researchers behind them in short talks on topics such as blockchain security, developer-centric IT security or episodic memory.

"We would have loved to invite people to join us in our new Open Space to celebrate the Computer Science Day together. But we're optimistic that we'll be able to make up for that when the opportunity arises. After all, we want to make the event an RUB tradition," says Biljana Cubaleska, executive director of the faculty.

The event is intended to further strengthen the cohesion and network of the faculty with RUB members, research and industry partners. After the short presentations, a digital "Get Together" invites to further acquaintance and exchange.

Review

The Computer Science Day celebrated its premiere in February 2021 with almost 200 guests. Since then, a lot has happened in Bochum's computer science: the Center of Computer Science, the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security and the Institute for Neuroinformatics have merged to form the Faculty of Computer Science. The degree programs in Computer Science, Applied Computer Science and IT Security have also been brought together under this umbrella.

However, computer science at the RUB has not only come together in terms of subject matter, but also in terms of space. Meanwhile, all working groups are located on campus, a large part of them - the dean's office including examination office and student advisory service, the offices of the HGI and the startup incubator cube5 - in the new headquarters of the faculty in the MC building, the remaining working groups are distributed among the IB, ID and NB buildings.
