Since 2016, "Security for Humans in Cyberspace" (SecHuman) has been investigating technical and societal issues of IT security in an inter- and transdisciplinary research environment. The graduate school is based on an innovative tandem concept: a doctoral candidate from a technical field collaborates with a doctoral candidate from the humanities or social sciences in a research tandem.
The interdisciplinary and holistic approach of the graduate school has made SecHuman a flagship project at Ruhr University Bochum. The comprehensive exploration of IT security, from cryptographic fundamentals to human-centered security, inspired, among other things, the successful conception of the Cluster of Excellence CASA - Cybersecurity in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries at Ruhr University. The Research Center "Trustworthy Data Science and Security," founded in 2022 by the Research Alliance Ruhr, also stands in the tradition of interdisciplinary IT security research, which had its initial spark in Bochum with SecHuman.
Furthermore, the interdisciplinary concept of tandem dissertations in SecHuman was already cited in 2017 in the report of the US National Academies Foundational Cybersecurity Researcho: "Improving Science, Engineering, and Institutions" as a pioneering model for the urgently needed expansion of interdisciplinary security research.
We would like to celebrate this success story on the occasion of the conclusion of the second funding phase of SecHuman on October 1, 2024, 12:30 pm, at the Veranstaltungszentrum of Ruhr University Bochum. You are cordially invited!
