Since October 7, 2019 Holz is also speaker of the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security (HGI), Research Department of the RUB. His deputy will be Prof. Dr.-Ing. Tim Güneysu, who heads the Chair of Security Engineering at the Ruhr University Bochum.

The HGI members elected Prof. Holz and Prof. Güneysu for a term of two years. As speakers and deputy speakers, the two IT security experts will be responsible for the Institute's public image and strategic orientation as well as for coordinating research projects. In his function as new speaker of the HGI, Holz replaced Prof. Dr. Gregor Leander, expert in the field of Symmetric Cryptography, who previously headed the institute.

Internationally leading scientists for the management of the HGI

As a highly specialized IT Security Research Department, the HGI investigates the various aspects of IT security in interdisciplinary working groups from the fields of electrical engineering and information technology, mathematics and computer science, as well as the humanities and social sciences. The institute is one of Europe's largest and most renowned higher education institutions in the field of IT security.

With the appointment as speaker and deputy, the HGI has now gained two experienced experts for the management and forward-looking orientation of the institute - both Holz and Güneysu are among the internationally leading scientists in their respective fields. The work of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Tim Güneysu, for example, was honoured with membership of the Junges Kolleg of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts, while Prof. Dr. Thorsten Holz was awarded an ERC Starting Grant for his achievements. In addition, Holz is already one of the speakers of the Cluster of Excellence CASA - Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries, which is located at the HGI.
