The 34th Chaos Communication Congress (CCC), one of the most important international gatherings in the computing world, was held as everyone was getting ready to see the old year out, from 27 to 30 December 2017. Around 15,000 visitors gathered at the Congress Center Leipzig, the largest number yet. The four days saw experts discuss a range of topics related to IT security – from security flaws and hacker attacks to artificial intelligence and data privacy.
Researchers based at the HGI also took advantage of the international stage provided by CCC to give talks on timely topics in the field. While Benjamin Kollenda and Philipp Koppe dedicated their talk to aspects of reverse engineering, Tim Blazytko and Moritz Contag spoke on the obfuscation of binary data.

In addition to the annual Chaos Communication Congress, the Chaos Computer Club organises a number of regional events and meetings. HGI researcher Prof. Christof Paar, an expert in embedded security, gave a talk on 25 January 2018 at Chaos Computer Club Cologne entitled "Why We Should Be Scared of Hardware Trojans".
