Hardware Reverse Engineering Workshop Brought Community to Bochum

From January 24 to 25, 2023, the first HArdware Reverse engineeRIng workShop (HARRIS'23) took place at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. It was co-sponsored by the Cluster of Excellence CASA and the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP).

With nearly 90 international participants from academia, industry, and government, the workshop brought together the community in Bochum to discuss the latest advancements in hardware reverse engineering. The declared goal of the workshop was to facilitate exchange between the diverse group of attendees and spark new research collaborations. Through formats such as "Rapid Research Rendezvous", where two or three participants were randomly matched, and thematic discussion tables, HARRIS'23 provided a platform for interactive networking.

The keynote address, titled "Hardware Reverse Engineering: A Vital Necessity Facing Tremendous Challenges," was delivered by Olivier Thomas, founder and CTO of Texplained, in which he highlighted the evolution of chip-level reverse engineering as well as its current applications. The program was complemented by approximately 20 research presentations that explored the various facets of hardware reverse engineering.
