International Cluster for Cyber Security – short CASA – will be officially launched in Bochum.

On 29 March 2019, the Cluster of Excellence “CASA - Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries" will be officially opened in the Bochum Dampfgebläsehaus. The cluster, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), will be established at the Horst-Görtz-Institute for IT Security (HGI) at the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) for the next seven years in the first instance.

Countermeasures against most powerful attackers

Today, many IT attacks come from large-scale attackers, especially from governmental or semi-governmental organizations. These adversaries are particularly worrisome because they act long-term and have significant technical capabilities and resources. Countermeasures against these most powerful attackers are the focus of the Cluster of Excellence CASA. The research follows an interdisciplinary approach, in which leading scientists with a technical orientation cooperate with researchers from psychology who investigate the interaction of human behavior and IT security. This constellation is unique in Europe.

Guests from science, business and politics

The CASA opening ceremony will be enriched by Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen, Minister of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia, Thomas Eiskirch, Lord Mayor of Bochum and Axel Schölmerich, Rector of the Ruhr University Bochum. In addition to the three speakers of the cluster, Thorsten Holz, Eike Kiltz and Christof Paar, the celebration will be topped off by the internationally high-ranking scientists Tal Rabin (IBM T.J. Watson Research Center) and Bart Preneel (KU Leuven). Approximately 200 national and international guests from science, business and politics are expected.

Worth millions funding receives a major boost

With a grant of around 30 million euros, IT security research and the Ruhr area will receive a major boost. Hereby, Bochum establishes itself increasingly as a leading international location for IT security research. CASA is one of 57 Clusters of Excellence funded by the DFG.
