The Faculty of Computer Science at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) is set to get new headquarters at the MARK 51°7 innovation park. In December 2025, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia approved the construction of the new facility. The move into the new building is planned for 2032.
The new location for RUB Computer Science, which also includes the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security (HGI), is being built on the former Opel site in the immediate vicinity of the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP). Many IT companies and partner firms of the faculty, such as ETAS, VW Infotainment, VMRay, and Physec, have already settled on the site. The RUB research buildings THINK and ZESS are also located at MARK 51°7. With the new computer science location, the innovation area continues to grow into a powerful high-tech campus that creates additional synergies for university and non-university research and enables more intensive cooperation with companies and start-ups.
Despite the new headquarters, the faculty will remain present on the RUB campus. The creation of designated anchor areas will ensure optimal support for students and continued exchange within the RUB. With the new building, the RUB is creating sustainable conditions for research, teaching, and transfer in Computer Science and IT Security.
The tendering process was published on February 9. As the building owner, RUB is assigning the planning, construction, and operation of the building for a period of 20 years.
MARK 51°7 – From industrial site to innovation campus
MARK 51°7, one of North Rhine-Westphalia’s largest innovation hubs, is being built on the site of the former Opel factory. The aim is to create optimal conditions for research, development, and technology transfer by bringing science, business, and start-ups together in close proximity. Numerous research institutions and businesses have already settled here. With the construction of the new Faculty of Computer Science building, Mark 51°7 will be further strengthened as a central science and innovation location and gain additional international appeal.
