The science podcast "Excellent Explained - Top Research for All" presents the clusters of excellence funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) as part of the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments. In episode 28, Prof. Eike Kiltz and Prof. M. Angela Sasse present the research work of the CASA Cluster of Excellence "Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries" at the Ruhr University Bochum.

In dialogue with podcaster Larissa Vassilian, cryptographer Eike Kiltz explains how the encryption algorithms he has developed will continue to protect our data from quantum computers in the future, and how serious mathematical problems are involved. In the second part of the podcast, Angela Sasse explains why the human factor must always be taken into account in IT security - and what misconceptions she sees among security experts and users when it comes to cybersecurity.

The experts

Prof. Eike Kiltz is a mathematician and professor of cryptography at the Ruhr University in Bochum, where he completed his doctorate in mathematics in 2004. He is one of the spokespersons of the Cluster of Excellence CASA. His research focuses on the theoretical foundations of asymmetric encryption methods. In addition to numerous third-party funds, he was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant in 2022, having already received an ERC Consolidator Grant in 2013.

Prof. M. Angela Sasse is a psychologist, has a PhD in computer science and lived in the UK for a long time to work at University College London. She did her Masters in Work Psychology at the University of Sheffield and completed her PhD in Computer Science at the University of Birmingham. In 2018, she took over the chair of Human-Centred Security at the Ruhr University Bochum. Among other things, Sasse is a member of the Leopoldina and spokesperson for the Digital Consumer Protection Advisory Board at the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). She is also one of the speakers of the Cluster of Excellence.
